What can AMRC members do to ensure the EU Data Protection Regulation does not stop valuable health research?

MEPs have agreed changes to the EU Data Protection Regulation which could hinder health research across Europe. But this isn't the end of the process; the Regulation will now be discussed by MEPs, the Council and Commission offering further opportunities to make changes.

Ataxia UK aims to find treatments and a cure for people with ataxia, a group of neurological conditions. Specifically the charity will fund research of relevance to people with ataxia and in which the ataxia is likely to be progressive. This includes conditions such as Friedreich’s ataxia, the spinocerebellar ataxias and other cerebellar ataxias (including idiopathic ones).

Asthma UK is the national charity dedicated to asthma in the UK and has a responsibility to tackle the issues affecting people with asthma today, and conduct research that will lead to a better future for people affected by asthma tomorrow. Whilst asthma kills three people each day, research into asthma is under-resourced and under-funded. Under the charity’s current research strategy, Asthma UK funds research into understanding the causes of asthma, stopping fatal asthma attacks, developing new and better treatments, encouraging good asthma control and preventing and curing asthma.

Paediatric research into the prevention and cure of renal illness and associated areas. We primarily support research: Defining the best treatment for those children who suffer from chronic kidney disease; Exploring new therapies which can potentially heal damaged kidneys; Finding the faulty genes which can run in families and cause kidney diseases. To maximise the benefit of our funding, we accept grants at an early stage of research, often providing pump-priming to initiate research that may be carried forward by larger grant-providing bodies in future.

Arthritis Research UK supports research into the cause, treatment and cure of arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases. The research of the charity encompasses a broad range of research areas, including molecular and cellular biology, immunology and inflammation research, pain, biomechanics and bioengineering, preventative medicine, orthopaedics, genetics and epidemiology and regenerative medicine. The research of the charity also has a focus on the translational and exploitation and supports experimental medicine and clinical trials.
