AMRC's response to this year's HEFCE grant letter

Published: 24 February 2017

We welcome the publication of this year’s HEFCE grant letter and the continued commitment to funding the higher education sector it demonstrates. Medical research charities are similarly committed; in 2015, AMRC’s members invested over £1.4 billion in UK research, 94% of which was spent in universities. Investment in English universities is underpinned by HEFCE’s Charity Research Support Fund (CRSF).

In order to protect the sustainability of medical research charity funding in universities and leverage further funding from the sector, AMRC are calling for some of the new funding for science and research announced during the Autumn Statement to be utilised to increase the CRSF. Despite receiving a largely unchanged budget from last year we hope that HEFCE will consider increasing the CRSF to successfully leverage the potential of the medical research charity sector.
