The Health Research Authority has appointed a chair – Professor Jonathan Montgomery. The authority was established as a special health authority in December 2011 and has been getting up and running so far without a chair and with an interim chief executive, Janet Wisely.
In the Queen’s speech in May, the government announced plans to introduce draft legislation to establish the Health Research Authority as a non-departmental public body. Introducing draft legislation will give parliamentarians an opportunity to scrutinise the plans and comment on them before the full bill is prepared and debated. We’re expecting this draft legislation to be published later this year.
There is also a ‘take note’ debate in the Lords tomorrow afternoon of two statutory instruments which aim to make small changes to the Health Research Authority. These just amend the regulations that established the authority in December, clarifying some of the appointment processes for new staff to the authority etc.
